LAWTON - The Lawton Lady Blue Devils, hosting the first round of the MHSAA volleyball playoffs, met Marcellus and walked away with a 3-0 victory over their neighbors to the south.
Marcellus had come to play and put up a serious fight.  All three games were extremely close, but Lawton held onto their leads to finish out each game on top.
“It wasn’t pretty but these girls pulled it off,” commented Lawton Coach Megan McCorry. Though they won in three straight sets, the Lady Devils didn’t amass big stats. Leading in kills was junior Josie Butchkowski with 10, followed by Madison Lawson with only six kills.
On the back line, Kiana Auton recorded 12 digs and picked up 23 set assists.  Lawson, a big hitter at the net, threw in six digs of her own to help the Blue Devil cause.
McCorry hung the difficulties with their match on a lack of energy.  In past games when the girls have played flat, McCorry has been able to light a fire under her players and they have responded to her motivation.
Lawton was to face Niles Brandywine in second round action on Thursday.
