MATTAWAN - The Mattawan soccer team improved its winning record to 12-2-3 on Tuesday evening. The team hosted the Niles Vikings for an early evening game, dominating the field for an 8-0 mercy win.
Mattawan wasted little time taking charge. Within the first few minutes of the game, the Wildcats worked their way through the Viking defense and take a two-goal lead. The Wildcats extended their lead, when Connor Burkett found Joshua Filiputti, who booted the ball past the Niles goalie, giving Mattawan a three-goal lead.
Just seconds later,  Mattawan scored again, when Burkett passed to teammate  Connor Williams, to assist in the goal. Mattawan held a four-goal lead with plenty of time still left in the first half.
The Niles defense was able to put a stop to the next Mattawan attack, blocking a hard kick toward the net -- but not the next Wildcat shot on goal. Burkett quickly found the back of the net to put the home team up, 5-0, halfway through the first half.
Before the half ended Mattawan’s Chad Harrison contributed to two more goals for the Wildcats. The junior earned a long solo goal, and assisted Benjamin Kaczmar on a goal.
Mattawan held a comfortable 7-0 lead at halftime.
After the break, the wildcats quickly scored their eighth  goal of the game, giving them the mercy win.
