Barry H. VanderWeele

    Barry Harold VanderWeele, 70, of Portage, died unexpectedly,  July 6, 2019, at his home in Portage. Barry was born Nov.  4, 1948 in Kal-amazoo, the son of Fred and Sarah (Gilkey) VanderWeele.
    A graduate of Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo,  Barry became a teacher for Comstock Public Schools. Not to be forgotten is his joy for Kalamazoo Wings hockey as he was a season ticket holder for over 30 years.
    Barry was preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, Don.
    Surviving are his loving wife of 43 years, JoAnn; son,  Michael (Christina) VanderWeele; two siblings, Mary Zinchefsky and Gil VanderWeele; two nep-hews, Ryan and Stephen; a great-nephew, Mark; and furry companions who were always by his side, Chloe, Carly, and Tanner.
    The family visited  with  friends, Thursday, July 11, at Betzler Life Story Funeral Home, 6080 Stadium Drive,  Kalamazoo, (269) 375-2900, where a service will be held today (Friday, July 12, at 11 a.m.  Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
