PAW PAW - Generations of holiday and cartoon characters, bands, dancers, church and school groups, firefighters, business owners and parade-watchers have welcomed Santa to Paw Paw as his sleigh touched down from the east. This year, Santa is taking a different route to get here, and the parade marchers ushering him in to town are changing direction to insure the Jolly Ol’ Elf has a safe landing.
Paw Paw’s annual Christmas in the Village activities kick off with the traditional community Christmas tree lighting on Friday, Dec. 6 in front of the Carnegie Center, 129 S. Kalamazoo St. Cookies, hot chocolate, and caroling will warm up the revelers, as they wait for the winners of a Paw Paw Elementary School essay contest to flip the switch and light the lights.
The next morning, Saturday, Dec. 7, at 10, the Children’s Christmas Parade steps off from its staging area on Gremps St., near the Department of Public Services, and heads north toward Michigan Ave., where marchers will turn east to meander through downtown to deliver Santa to Freshwater Community Church.  The parade will disassemble at Tyler Field, but the holiday happenings will be in the new Commons Community Room at Freshwater. Families should enter at Entrance C near the gymnasium. Inside will be kids’ crafts, refreshments, and of course, chats and photos with Santa. There will also be a holiday crafts show in the gym, and a petting zoo outside.
Elsewhere around town on that Saturday, Dec. 7, The Strand is offering free showings of “The Polar Express” at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.;  and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Women are hosting their annual Cookie Walk and craft sale at the church, 412 Cedar Street,  beginning at 9 a.m.
The Paw Paw Community Chorus will present its winter concert at the Paw Paw Performing Arts Center on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 4 p.m.
The next weekend, Dec. 12-14, on the main stage at Freshwater Church, the Paw Paw Village Players will present “A Christmas Carol.”
Santa will return to Paw Paw to visit with children and pose for pictures at the Carnegie Community Center December 12 and 13 from 3 to 8 p.m., and Dec. 14 from 10 a.m. to noon, and 1 to 5 p.m.
On Dec. 14, the Paw Paw Area Rotary Club will host its annual Santa Run, beginning at 9 a.m. at Paw Paw Middle School.
Village of Paw Paw residents and businesses are invited to enter the Christmas Decorating Contest sponsored by the Village. Winners will receive varying discounts on their December electric bills.
Christmas in the Village events are provided by the Paw Paw Downtown Development Authority.  The DDA is grateful to this year’s contributing sponsors: Walmart, Amore Pizza, Paw Paw Playhouse, Edgin Creations, Paw Paw Rentals, Great Lakes Belting, The Garden Griddle, Maple Lake Chiropractic, Mercantile Bank, Bloomingdale Communications, Hiemstra Optical, Golden Star Realty, Harloff Manufacturing, Sen. Aric Nesbitt, the Knights of Columbus, Meyer Wood Products, Biggby Coffee, Strength Beyond, Omni Credit Union, St. Julian Winery, Paw Paw Kiwanis, Hot Shotz Photography, and the South Haven-Van Buren Convention and Visitors Bureau.
