Teens and teams needed for Envirothon

PAW PAW - The Van Buren Conservation District (VBCD) and Voyagers 4-H Club are looking to recruit Van Buren County high school students for Envirothon.
Envirothon is a nationwide program in which high school students, who have an environmental interest in topics such as Aquatic Ecology, Energy, Forestry, Soils/Geology, Wildlife and Agriculture,  receive training from resource professionals in the subject areas and compete against other student teams across the region, state, and for the winning State team, nation.
Students can join a team with other students or recruit an advisor and build their own Envirothon Team.  All qualified Envirothon Teams compete against other high school students at a regional competition.
The VBCD staff will host a series of educational sessions for students, both classroom and in field opportunities, to come and learn more in depth about the subject areas.
Sessions will include professional resource presentations, hands-on experiences, take-home study information, and practice competitions and quizzes to help teams prepare for the Envirothon competitions.
According to Kyle Mead, Michigan Agricultural Educational Assurance Program (MAEAP) Technician at the Van Buren Conservation District,  Envirothon is a great way to see if the subject areas are something an individual would like to continue working toward for their future, to meet and ask questions to a wide variety of professionals in the field, and to show extra circular and academic achievement to your resume.
“Envirothon is a great program to volunteer for and compete as a student.  I was involved as a student, it showed me what a career in Natural Resources could look like and allowed me to meet professionals in a variety of fields,” said Mead, a 15-year  VBCD employee,  who has been working with Envirothon  since high school. “Envirothon is what introduced me to my Conservation District, who later hired me, and without Envirothon I don’t know if I would have this job I have today.” Last year, the only Van Buren County Envirothon Team, won first place at Regionals, which are scheduled this year for March 14 at Ft. Custer, Augusta, MI.  The team went on to do very well in State competition, scheduled for May 15, in many  subject area competitions.
