United Way prepares for tax season

PAW PAW - United Way of Van Buren County is announcing details of its upcoming Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) free tax preparation program for the 2018 tax season.
The VITA program provides IRS-certified volunteers who prepare taxes at no charge for low- to moderate-income families. This year, those with household incomes of $55,000 or less who do not operate a business, (this includes renting out property) are eligible to have their taxes done free at any of the VITA locations throughout  Van Buren County.
The Tax Reform for 2018 will change how an individual’s tax return looks. Standard deductions have been increased, personal exemptions are gone, and the Child Tax Credit has increased. All individuals filing taxes for 2018 must have their Social Security Card and those Married Filing Joint returns, both parties must be present.
“You must also bring your Marketplace Form 1095-A, which you should receive either online or in the mail by Feb. 1, 2019.  You can’t file without it.” said Vera E. Sebree, Van Buren County United Way Executive Director. Taxpayers who have Medicare, Medicaid, Tri-Care, or employer-provided insurance do not need any health insurance forms to file their taxes this year.
