PAW PAW - Through a federal program, the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office recently added two vehicles to its service fleet, which if purchased new, would have cost over $1 million. Instead, the county was able to take possession for just over $8,400, according to Van Buren County Sheriff Daniel Abbott.
The sheriff’s office acquired an MRAP rescue vehicle  from Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s  Office, which is also enrolled in the 1033 federal program.
Abbott said the federal program through the military, allows law enforcement to  secure vehicles at no cost. The only requirement is that once the  vehicle is no longer needed, it is returned to the federal government.  A yearly inventory is completed by  law enforcement agencies to show the vehicle or vehicles are in use.
Abbott said the MRAP vehicle, if purchased new, would have a price tag of $1 million. In securing it from Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office, Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office invested  $1,461 into the vehicle.
In the summer of 2018, the Van Buren County Sheriff’s  Office obtained a Hummer through the 1033 federal program. After being transported from New Jersey, the vehicle received $6,941 in new equipment, repairs and a new paint job. If purchased new, the vehicle would cost over $250,000.
Abbott said the vehicles will be used for rescue operations,  extreme vehicle crashes if needed, and by the sheriff’s office  SWAT Team.
Abbott also said the vehicles will keep civilians and sheriff’s office members safe when responding to dangerous calls, citing the bullet-proof glass and armor on both vehicles.
