LAST CALL FOR CROSSROADS
The Smithsonian Institution’s traveling exhibit, Crossroads: Change in Rural America, remains open to the public at VBDL Webster Memorial, Decatur, through December 5.
Crossroads, part of the Smithsonian’s Museum On Main Street project, explores how rural American communities changed in the 20th century. Although the vast majority of the United States landscape remains rural with only 3.5% of the landmass considered urban, the percentage of Americans living in rural areas dropped from 60% to 17% in the past century. The exhibition looks at that remarkable societal change and how rural Americans responded.
Van Buren District Library is one of only six sites in Michigan chosen to host the exhibit. After its stay in Decatur, Crossroads travels to Devereaux Memorial Crawford County Library, Grayling; Reed City Area District Library, Presque Isle District Library, Rogers City; and finally, Pickford Community Library, Pickford, in May 2020. The exhibit’s first stop was the Old Mill Museum in Dundee.
Crossroads is free and open to the public during the library’s regular business hours, Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
For more information, phone (269) 423-4771, e-mail info@vbdl.org, or stop by the library at 200 North Phelps Street, Decatur.
