LAWRENCE TWP. - Westbound I-94 near Lawrence was closed for more than two hours Monday following a multi-vehicle crash in which four people were injured.
In a press release, Van Buren County Sheriff Dan Abbott reported deputies were dispatched to the 52- mile marker on westbound I-94 at approximately 11:06 a.m. for a four-car personal injury traffic crash with multiple individuals entrapped in the vehicles and fuel leaking from one vehicle.
At the scene, officers found a Ford transit van overturned on its side, blocking both lanes of traffic; a Subaru Crosstrek in a ditch with severe front and rear end damage; a Cadillac SRX with rear end damage; and a Chevy Equinox in a ditch more than 100 yards away, stuck on a culvert.
Deputies assessed that the four occupants of the Subaru were injured, and immediately started administering first aid to two patients pinned in the vehicle, one of them in and out of consciousness. Based on the severity of the injuries, AirCare was launched to the scene for transport, and other emergency agencies were dispatched for assistance.
Once fire and EMS personnel arrived, more life saving techniques were rendered and extrication tools utilized. A 21-year-old male occupant was transported via AirCare to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo for further treatment; a 24-year-old woman was taken there by ambulance. They were initially listed in critical condition.
The other occupants of the vehicle, a 21-year-old woman and 23-year-old man, were listed in stable condition. According to Sheriff Abbott, once all patients were treated and accounted for, deputies continued to investigate the crash scene, with the assistance of the Michigan State Police. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident.
Also assisting at the scene were the Pokagon Tribal Police, Van Buren Emergency Medical Services, Life EMS, and the Lawrence and Hartford fire departments.
