Communities change plans for Memorial Day

Due to the COVID-19 social distancing orders curtailing public gatherings, area communities have   altered Memorial Day their observances this year.
Lawton Village Manager Lisa Imus said this week that all public Memorial Day events in Lawton have been cancelled. The Gobles City Commission also cancelled the Memorial Day Parade and Veterans Ceremony set for May 25, citing concerns for the well-being of veterans, parade participants and spectators
The Village of Lawrence will not hold a Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 25, according to Lawrence Village President David Quick; but the Lawrence American Legion Hess-Eastman Post 174 is tentatively scheduled to conduct brief services at area cemeteries on Sunday afternoon, May 24.
Memorial Day services are still being planned for Monday, May 25 in Paw Paw and Mattawan. Details about Paw Paw’s observances will appear in next week’s Courier-Leader. Event organizers at Mattawan, Dan Brooks and area veterans, are planning a brief service at 2:30 p.m. at Mattawan Memorial Park.
